This is an interesting response, haven’t seen much of this kind of reply.

hard work gets you anywhere.  

first, to split hairs: this person is still the 99%. she’s still not part of the 1% of americans who take in 40% of the nation’s wealth. that’s what “the 99%” means. it’s nobody’s decision.
secondly, and more important: perpetuating the good ol’ american bullshit “pull yourself up by your bootstraps” philosophy is incredibly dangerous and patronizing. sure, “that’s how it’s supposed to work”… until you get hit by a car while riding your bike, and the driver speeds off, and you have no health insurance. or a family member gets ill and you take time off to care for him/her. or the company you work for goes under. 
people aren’t struggling because they’re lazy. they’re struggling because of circumstances beyond their control. they’re struggling because of self-righteous assumptions like this one, the belief that people who struggle are simply weak-minded, a shrug that says WELP TOO BAD, I’VE GOT MINE! to neighbors, people who are in real distress.
